Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Jyväskylä is a local ESN section.

ESN Jyväskylä organizes multicultural activities, events, and trips for all students interested in internationalization, both Finnish and international. Our events consist of several parties, sports, trips, and projects, about which you can read more on this website. In principle, ESN Jyväskylä operates in English.

Internationally, the Erasmus Student Network is one of the biggest interdisciplinary student associations in Europe, and was founded in 1989 for supporting and developing student exchange. We are present in 361 Institutions of Higher Education in 34 different countries. The network is constantly developing and expanding.

President:  Claudia Thomayer

My name is Claudia and I’m studying Early Childhood Education. Originally I’m from Vienna, Austria and I spent my Erasmus semester here in Jyväskylä in spring 2014. Those five months were the most amazing time in my life and as I completely fell in love with everything here, I decided to stay for doing my Master’s.

As ESN JKL was mainly responsible for making my Erasmus semester as amazing as it was, I am so glad to be part of this family and awesomeness now for the second year already. After being the travel coordinator last year, I am know facing the challenge of being the president of ESN Jyväskylä. I can’t wait to create a unique year for and with all of you.

I love being outdoor and as long as there is snow, you’ll find me at Laajis (the skiing “hill”) nearly every day. So if you love (downhill) skiing as much as I do or if you want to try it, let me know! I love winter and snow. So don’t wonder, if you see me enjoying also the 100th snowfall in one winter like a 3-year-old. (And when the skiing season is finally over, I’ll do bike tours as often as possible.)

Vice President: Jae Jensen

Hi, I’m Jae and very happy to serve as your vice president this year!
Ever since I first got involved with ESN last year while interning in Tallinn, Estonia, I have been drawn to the organization and its cause: student mobility. I’m from Oregon, in the Northwestern United States and first went abroad to Germany as a high school exchange student. In 2013 I returned to Germany for a semester, and have since come to Finland to complete a master’s in educational leadership. To me, there has been nothing more exciting than exploring other countries and cultures and teaching others about mine.

In my free time I like knitting, learning some new yoga poses and studying languages (like Finnish). And of course traveling!

I am proud to be part of a movement that supports students to travel, learn and build international friendships. I am already sure that your exchange will change your life, but I hope that my ESN Jyväskylä team and I will make it that much more incredible.

Local Representative: Sarina Geldhof

Hello! My name is Sarina, and I’m the local representative this year, which means that I’m the link between the local and the (inter)national level of ESN. I’m from Bruges, Belgium, and joined the local ESN section in my student city Leuven in 2013. I fell in love with the great atmosphere and spirit in the network, and I haven’t left it since, being involved on both the local, national and international level.

Last year, I came to Jyväskylä for my Erasmus exchange in the autumn semester. I really liked it here, so I came back last October to start my PhD in nuclear physics. So I spend most of my days in the lab, and when not there you can find me either reading, baking or watching tv shows at home, out in the city with friends, or somewhere travelling around Europe. I can’t wait to make this an amazing year for all of you with the rest of my new ESN family!

Secretary: Ella Hellman

Hi all!

I am Ella, the secretary of the ESN Jyväskylä board. Currently, I am working as a Content Marketing Trainee in a company called Naturvention which means I am having a little break from my studies. But I would never have a break from ESN so you'll probably see me around in our events.

If I am not studying, working or doing ESN stuff, you can find me doing sports, hanging with my friends or watching Netflix. I do love to keep myself busy and I am always open for all kinds of trips and activities, for example one of my crazy passions is laser tag so if you ever happen to need a team mate for a game - you know who to contact.

Treasurer: Tatu Oksanen

I'm Tatu the treasurer, Tampere reinforcement to the ESN Jyväskylä team. I am a Master of Economic Sciences, currently study statistics, and work part time here in Jyväskylä.  I've been an international tutor in the university of Tampere, and I've earlier held two board positions in other student organizations. Right now I'm mostly focusing on improving my language skills, and creating social network in this city that is completely new to me.

I love travelling, especially in the East Europe and I've actually spent 3 of the last 6 years in countries other than my home country. I enjoy nature, jogging and hiking but I also enjoy boats, motorcycles and fast cars. I like everything about this city, except the statue that has two stones on the main street, because it is really bugging me.

Travel Coordinator: Angelina Kuokkanen

Hey! I’m Angelina and I am ESN Jyväskylä’s Travel Coordinator for the year 2016.

I’m currently working on my third year of Business Studies at University of Jyväskylä and trying to balance my desire to do everything and be everywhere while achieving my academic goals. When I’m not obsessing over my plans for the future week, month or year, you can find me in the cinema catching up on the latest moving pictures or on my sofa reading a book. I also enjoy spending time outside in the nature and discovering new places. Always in for a good ol’ fashioned board game night!

About a year ago in the spring of 2015 I was packing for my exchange in Graz, Austria, not yet knowing how big of an impact my semester abroad will have on me. My exchange ended up being an unforgettable experience full of amazing people and wonderful adventures. After returning, I decided to prolong my international experience by joining local ESN section and was thrilled to be chosen to be part of our new board. As a travel coordinator I want to be part of making your stay in Jyväskylä as exciting as my exchange was for me. I’m in charge of the memorable trips we organize, so if you have any questions about trips to Lapland, Russia or anywhere else, just ask!

Events Coordinator: Aura Vuorela

Hi there! I’m Aura, a happy little dreamer straight from Jyväskylä, also known as your very own event’s coordinator (teaming up with Juuli)! I am truly passionate about a good party, unique experiences, unforgettable time and meeting as many beautiful human beings on this planet as possible. I’m always up for a little (or big) adventure, or just a casual hang out. I’m also a hopeless globe trotter always planning for the next destination to explore.

At the moment I’m on my fourth year studying speech communication, working on my master's degree and taking some intercultural communication and French on the side. I had my perfect Erasmus experience in Brussels in spring 2014, and I absolutely loved every second of it. Now I want to make sure your experience will be as unforgettable and amazing as it was for me!

I’m very excited to meet you all, and I’m sure we will have a lot of fun together! If you ever feel like sharing some travel stories, if you’re up for a good conversation, or if you have any questions don’t hesitate to approach me (mostly I can be found from the uni library).

Events Coordinator: Juuli Haapasaari

Hi guys! My name is Juuli and I am your Event Coordinator for the year 2016 with Aura.

I'm a second year Information System Science student who also loves to study languages. I'm a huge music geek as well, so it's likely that you'll see me with my headphones on most of the time. But that does not mean that you couldn't come talk to me! I am always ready to help you out the best I can with anything. And if you like food and chit chatting, like me, I am always looking for lunch company to eat and shoot the breeze at some uni cafeteria!

I got to know about ESN through tutoring international students. Our section was all the time organizing something cool and I immediately felt that I wanted to be part of it. I was lucky to be elected and now I can't wait to get the year started - I will do my everything to make your experience unforgettable! Welcome to Jyväskylä!

IT Manager: Fabian Prezja

Hello!
I am Fabian from Thessaloniki/Greece. I am currently studying in the Master's programme of Music, Mind & Technology (MMT) at the University of Jyväskylä. I like socializing, reading books/articles,  playing the guitar, traveling  and coffee ! ...Lots of coffee ! I have had the opportunities to experience the events, activities, and trips from ESN Jyväskylä since my studies began. I have had great fun with what ESN Jyväskylä has organized since then! The welcoming and friendly atmosphere along with the local and international communication opportunities have been convivial and engaging all along. I revere the ideas of ESN for their international weight and cohesion. I am delighted to be part of the ESN family in Jyväskylä and I will do my best to learn, assist and contribute!! Cheers ! :)

PR & Communications Manager: Elli Kantanen

Hello there and Welcome to Jyväskylä!

My name is Elli, I’m 24-year old economics major student and as minors I study communication, finance and german language and culture. It’s my second year in ESN family now: last year I was known as a money lady, since I was a treasurer of ESN Jyväskylä.

There is no way I could leave this awesomeness behind so this year I’ll be a PR and Communication manager and in charge of the sponsor, partner, and student association relations, so if you've got any ideas on that field, come and tug my sleeve and we'll figure out something new and exciting! In addition, I’m looking forward to meet you, create new experiences with you and hear all the stories that you, my new friend, have to tell!

I like challenging myself by trying new things out: lately I’ve participated to the beginner’s course of rugby and started in a new job. For this semester my new field will take place in learning to use some kind of graphics editor. Therefore I challenge also you guys to step out from your comfort zone! When I’m not studying or ESNing (yes,it is a verb!) you would most likely find me redecorating my small apartment, in the ski slope or relaxing in a sauna!
